Overseas Trips
14th March 2013

Chinese Orchestra, China

To commemorate Dunman High School Chinese Orchestra’s 40th Anniversary, the Orchestra held an Overseas Educational and Performance Trip to China from 14th-21st March 2013. The Orchestra performed and toured in major cities in eastern China, namely Shanghai, Nantong, Hangzhou and Wuxi.

The Orchestra had the honour of performing in two prominent theatres, Nantong Gengsu Theatre and Hangzhou Theatre, during this overseas trip. It was a privilege to be able to put up concerts at both venues, both recognised for their excellent facilities and also for their contributions in the promotion of Chinese culture. Under the baton of our music director Dr Tay Teow Kiat and conductor Mr Dedric Wong, the Orchestra managed to put up successful performances despite having to adapt to the vastly different climate in China. The pieces played for the concerts included widely known pieces such as “In Honour of Lord Guan”, “Yellow River Cantata” and “The Great Wall Capriccio”, which showcased the different aspects of Chinese culture. As part of a cultural interaction, the orchestra also performed pieces with a Singaporean flavour such as “The Awakening” and “Di Tanjong Katong”.

These two concerts were also highly publicised on newspapers and television stations within the region. Newspapers such as Xinhua Daily published articles on our Orchestra’s performances, according praise on the Orchestra’s interpretation of the pieces played, and also recognising our efforts in promoting Chinese music.

In addition, the Orchestra also had the opportunity to participate in exchange programmes with the students of Nantong No.1 Middle School and Hangzhou Arts School. It was a valuable opportunity for members of the orchestra to discuss the differences in school life of both countries as well as to share their common interest in music. Students from the two schools also showcased their talents and strengths through musical showcases and educational tours, which our members enjoyed and were greatly inspired by.

Members then spent the remaining of the trip sightseeing and visiting various cultural sites. The orchestra visited famous musicians’ residences such as the Liu Brothers’ Residence and A-bing’s Residence, where they developed a better understanding of these acclaimed Chinese musicians who have composed pieces members have played before. The visit to the Shanghai Museum of Oriental Musical Instruments provided students with the chance to have a better appreciation of the rich history of Chinese music. Students also had the chance to visit places such as Hangzhou’s West Lake and the Shanghai World Financial Centre, where students were able to broaden their world view and gain insight into both ancient and modern China.

The rare opportunity to travel abroad to perform not only allowed members to hone their performing skills, but has also increased their exposure to Chinese heritage and culture which will definitely aid them in the understanding of Chinese music. This trip has provided members with valuable experiences and helped forge stronger friendships. It has also gone a long way in fostering a more united Orchestra that strives toward continually improving itself. This trip is no doubt a memorable one that will forever be etched in our minds.
