Symphonic Band, Brisbane
Dunman High School Symphonic Band went for a music immersion and exchange programme in Brisbane from 31st May to 6th June 2013. A group of 80 band students and 4 teachers (Mr Teo Joo Cheong, Ms Tan Mei Qiang, Ms Asvathaman Tharini Devi and Ms Zarifah Bte Zainal) embarked on this musical journey together.
During this journey, our students attended a music workshop where they were given the opportunity to be tutored by four professional Australian conductors. The guidance from the conductors was valuable. It was an eye-opening and enriching experience for our students.
Besides the workshop, our students also had three exchange visits with the local schools, namely Kelvin Grove High School (Brisbane), Redlands College and Brisbane Girls Grammar School. Through these exchanges, our students had the opportunity to learn from the Australian students and to know more about each other’s culture (in terms of school and music).
The highlight of the trip was the combined concert with Redlands College at Cleveland Baptist Church. It was a night of beautiful music and a wonderful cultural exchange. The moment of tears came when our audience and the parents of the Australian students initiated a standing ovation when our students played the finale piece. That was an unforgettable moment for all of them.
Overall, it was an enjoyable, meaningful and memorable trip for all the students and the teachers. The students have learnt more about the culture of Australia, learnt to interact with the Australian students and has also forged stronger bonds within themselves.
Our motto “军乐队一家人” resonates even stronger in their hearts…
