DHS Leadership Symposium 2019

The Dunman High School Leadership Symposium is an annual event organised by members of the Dunman High Leadership Programme, and was held on the 27 July 2019. On top of around 300 Dunman High participants, the Organising Committee this year also invited over 100 student leaders from 24 secondary schools and junior colleges. We had the privilege of having Mr Mike Li, Principal Coach at Trainium Academy Singapore as our Keynote Speaker, as well as four other Concurrent Session Speakers – Ms Wendy McDonald, Head of Strategic Solutions at Influence Solutions; Ms Silvia Lim, Co-Director of social enterprise BloomBack; Mr Kevin Lee, former Chairman of the Asian Women’s Welfare Association; and Mr Ng Eng Soon, Senior Director of the Singapore Sports Council. The speakers shared their insights regarding the topic of planning: Planning in a Team, The Importance of Planning, A Different Plan and Not Following the Plan. Each speaker had a wealth of experience and expertise from respective fields and shared generously with the audience.

Participants enjoyed 12 different games, each with its own unique learning objective, and learned to work together as a team, across CCAs and schools. The station games were followed by an hour-long session of challenge games where teams pitted themselves against each other in situations that tested not just their ability to plan and adapt to changes, but also their ability to be decisive and work well in a team.

“Overall, leadership symposium was nothing short of meaningful for me. Over the course of the symposium, members of my group opened up to each other and we completed most of our tasks at the stations with ease. The keynote speech and the concurrent sessions were really informative and enlightening — I had a really insightful time hearing them share their experiences and I definitely learnt useful things that would indeed guide me as a leader.” – Tan Yi Jin, Participant

“It was an enriching and memorable experience to plan this event and work with such a dedicated and hardworking Organising Committee. We hope that participants were able to use some of the takeaway from that day to their respective leadership journeys. We are privileged to have had this opportunity to plan an event on such a great scale, and above all to have learnt new skills and forged new friendships from this experience.”  – Steffi Tan, Nicole Yap and Ray Lim from the DHS Leadership Symposium Organising Committee
