EZ COE T&L Seminar 2012
2nd East Zone COE T&L Seminar – “Assessment: Principles and Practices”
Dunman High School teachers and about 100 participants from schools in the East Zone attended the 2nd Teaching and Learning Seminar organised by EZ COE T&L on 21 June 2012. In his welcome address, Dr Foo Suan Fong, Principal of Dunman High School, stressed the importance of and need for effective formative and summative assessments to better support teaching and learning.
The keynote speaker of the Seminar was Mr Toh Poh Guan, Director of Assessment and Research from the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB). In his keynote address, ‘Assessment for Learning – Fit for Purpose, Effective for Learning’, Mr Toh stressed that assessment supports students’ learning as it is a vital tool in identifying and closing learning gaps in the classroom. He also gave realistic examples to illustrate how a teacher could use assessment to further improve on lesson delivery and address the students’ inability to grasp concepts. The concrete illustrations and examples clearly helped the participants to better understand the ideas shared by Mr Toh. Many were also seen actively taking down the practical, useful pointers during his keynote presentation.
The five subject-based concurrent sessions were beneficial to those attending and those presenting as there was a lively exchange of ideas and an enthusiasm for learning and sharing. Most participants felt that the sessions were a very good platform for sharing ideas and teaching practices. They felt that the subject-specific sharing sessions were particularly useful as the ideas and materials shared were relevant to subject areas that they were teaching.
In all, it was a very fruitful morning.
