Narrogin Immersion Programme, Singapore
On the morning of 13July 2013, 20 Australian students from Narrogin Senior High School arrived at Dunman High School Hostel after a five hour flight from Perth, Western Australia. There, they got to meet their hosts for the next 5 days.
Following that, the Australians got to experience first-hand, how it feels like to take a bus in Singapore. The Dunman High Student Councilors organised a food trail for them at Marine Parade Food Centre. They were told a list of local delights before their Singaporean buddies accompanied them around the food centre, teaching them how to order the food in local slang. They had fun tasting all the food, although some frowned upon the spicy mee goreng.
After that heartwarming brunch, the group made their way back to school, where Narrogin students said goodbye to their new found friends as their Singaporean buddies brought them to different homes for the 4 night homestay. Many of them got to ride the MRT for the first time on the way home.
Over the weekends, Narrogin students got to spend time with their Singaporean friends. Some had gone shopping at Orchard Road, some went to the newly opened Adventure Cove Water Theme Park and a few even went to grace the National Day Parade Rehearsals. Narrogin students have learnt more about the culture and customs of Singaporean families, and have forged closer bonds with their buddies and their families.
Despite the fact that they were all tired from a weekend packed with activities, everyone gathered at school on Monday morning. A welcome ceremony took place in the hall during morning assembly, followed by a school tour by the Singaporean buddies.
On Tuesday, Narrogin students joined their buddies for lessons in the morning, immersing themselves in the Singaporean school culture. Everyone sat down for lunch at the canteen before sending them off to the zoo.
When they came back from the zoo at night, their buddies were waiting for them. The hungry ones were taken to Simpang Road for a prata supper, while the tired ones went home to sleep. Everyone gathered in school with their luggage on Wednesday morning.
We all gathered for one last time on Wednesday evening for a farewell dinner. At the end of the dinner, everyone mingled around and took pictures. Tears were shed as they boarded their tour bus as they had to leave their buddies after 5 eventful days.
In 5 days, close friendships have been sparked between the Singaporeans and their Australian buddies. They have forged many beautiful memories that they will remember for a long time to come. Even though the 2012-2013 Narrogin-Singapore Exchange Programme has come to an end, these friendships and memories built haven’t. May the Singaporeans and Australians continue to keep in touch and deepen the friendships that they have established.
